Class Experience
Step into the mesmerizing world of watercolor and discover the joy of painting with a medium that flows, blends, and surprises! Unlike acrylics or oils, watercolor dances across the paper, creating luminous layers and dreamy effects that can’t be fully controlled—but that’s part of the magic!
In this workshop, young artists will learn to embrace the unpredictability of watercolor while mastering key techniques like wet on wet, wet on dry, layering, blending, and paint lifting.
With each brushstroke, they’ll explore the beauty of transparency and movement, building confidence and creativity along the way.
By the end of the session, participants will have completed four small stunning paintings, each showcasing their newfound skills and artistic voice.
Get ready to dive into color, experiment with texture, and let watercolor lead the way!

What you'll learn
- Develop Craft – Students will learn essential watercolor techniques, including wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, layering, blending, and paint lifting, gaining confidence in handling this fluid medium.
- Engage & Persist – Students will embrace the challenges of working with watercolor, learning to stay patient and adaptable as they refine their skills.
- Envision – As they experiment with different techniques, students will learn to visualize their paintings in layers, planning how colors interact and how washes and textures can be used to create depth and mood.
- Express – Through their four unique watercolor paintings, students will explore how color, shape, and texture can communicate emotions, ideas, and personal artistic expression.
- Observe – By working with watercolor’s transparency and blending properties, students will sharpen their observational skills, noticing subtle shifts in tone, texture, and the way water moves pigment across the page.
- Reflect – Throughout the workshop, students will pause to evaluate their work, considering how different techniques affect their paintings and making adjustments to enhance their artistic vision.
- Stretch & Explore – Watercolor is all about experimentation! Students will take creative risks, testing new techniques and embracing happy accidents as they discover the endless possibilities of this medium.
- Understand Art Worlds – By learning foundational watercolor techniques, students will gain an appreciation for how artists use watercolor in various styles, from traditional landscapes to abstract and expressive works.
Sample Class Format
- (0-15 minutes) Arrival, Hand Washing, and Invitation
- (15 - 30 minutes) Understanding Art Worlds & Demonstration of Activities
- (30 - 105 minutes) Studio Time
- (105 - 120 minutes) Clean Up, Reflection, and Creator's Mission

What To Bring
- All art making materials will be provided.
- Please dress for a mess. artSPARK smocks not guaranteed to be available.
- Water bottles are not necessary and often get left behind. We have a water cooler if a drink is needed.
