Class Experience
Our well-loved Oil Painting class is perfect for beginners and intermediate students. Gain confidence in using oil paint to express your ideas through original paintings. We provide a supportive environment, whether you choose a personal photo or observe still-life arrangements. Bring your still-life objects or use ours for inspiration. Students learn layering, color theory, compositional skills, as well as techniques to blend and manipulate paint on canvas. Perfect for beginners or those returning to art.
- Please note your work will take days to dry and can be left in our studio during your course syllabus.
Sample Class Format
- Learn how to prime a canvas, outline your painting, and layer.
- Learn how to blend on the canvas when working wet-in-wet to create values, gradients, or transitions. Oil Painting is a longer process, the paint remains wet for longer, allowing you more time to manipulate your work.
- Demo a range of brushstroke applications, for example how to paint using a dry brush to get more textural effects, which is perfect for highlighting.
- Develop confidence in color mixing and choosing the correct palette for your subject to create mood and tone.

To reschedule a single class, purchase a Rescheduling Ticket 24 hours before class.
To reschedule a full semester, email us for a credit (less a $75 admin fee). No refunds will be provided.
What To Bring
- Oil paint + the use of brushes are provided and included in your course fee.
- CANVAS IS NOT INCLUDED IN YOUR COURSE FEE. Please purchase a canvas and bring it with you to class, we recommend a medium size canvas (11x14 or 12x17), to begin with. Canvas may be purchased at your local art store (support small businesses when you can!). Please note you may need more than one canvas for a full course pkg.
- A limited selection of canvases can also be purchased in our studio for:
- 8x10 for $15
- 11x14 for $20
- 16x20 for $35

Meet your Instructor
Nick H.
Originally from Oklahoma, Nick Hill received his Bachelor in Fine Arts from Tulsa University. After graduating he studied art abroad in Florence, Italy and proceeded to the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture, where he completed his Master in Fine Arts in 2022. Nick has worked as a Muscogee Language Revitalization Instructor at the Muscogee Nation and taught at a daycare there. In his own work, Nick works primarily as an oil painter, but has a proclivity for sculpture.
