Class Experience

For Teens 12-17 yrs

The human face and body is an exciting study but many students find it challenging or intimidating. In this course, we help demystify this process with preliminary drawing exercises before moving on to fully realized paintings. This is an excellent class for students working on portfolios, thinking about a career in the visual arts, building up a body of work, or are up for a challenge!

Sample Class Format

  • We will be learning practical drawing + sketching exercises to study the human face and body. Learn how to break down the face into halves and compositions into the rule of thirds
  • Develop compositions for dynamic poses + examine angles: profile view, 3/4 views, and non-traditional angles, like upshots, extreme close-ups + action poses to give our subjects a realistic feel.
  • Choose the right composition, our instructors will encourage you to work from personal subject matter: photos or pictures of loved ones. These can be well-known personalities from TV, film, or the news or from your own family. Choosing an interesting face that captures your imagination helps bring a more unique feel as you approach your subject more personally.
  • Examine how to portray our subjects helps us develop observational skills. looking at light sources.
  • How to set your subject in the right setting + how to employ the light you want, to make tonal, emotional, and mood changes.
  • After preliminary sketching, we will move on to painting our subjects on canvas.
  • Learn color mixing + how to apply texture to represent hair, skin, clothing drapery, and fabric textures, and look at other types of surfaces like jewelry, glasses etc
  • At the end of the course, your instructor will offer valuable critique to help you continue your journey.
