“When I’ve earned this badge I will know how to set a sports goal and practice to achieve it.”
“Building your strength”- Before the Girls come out, they can download a pdf from our website with exercises to practice for a week or two before coming to fly.
Decide on a goal: We will take time to get to know one another and discuss their fitness goals. We will then discuss their goal for the day. The goal for some may be to accomplish a knee hang to a catcher on the flying trapeze, for another it may be to accomplish a knee hang on their own on the low trapeze, or somewhere in between. We will discuss the process of Flying Trapeze. We will talk about the importance of setting goals, and the importance of practice. This includes visualization as a practice. We will discuss how no athlete reaches their goals without taking baby steps, and without practice. We will talk specifically about a few of the great trapeze artists and what they were able to achieve through hard work and practice.
“Drill for Skill”- We first learn all of the necessary skills for the Flying Trapeze on the ground. We will learn and practice properly jumping off the board, body position while in the air, about patience and timing. We then use the low hung trapeze to practice getting into a knee hang on the low bar.
“Practice, Practice, Practice”- Once they are comfortable with this, they get to climb the ladder to the high Trapeze. Throughout the process this girls will be protected by safety lines. Girls will use their newly obtained skills to swing on the Flying Trapeze. They will use their practiced patience and body skills to get into a knee hang and finally when they have worked their way through these steps, and have gained confidence in their abilities, and are able to do a knee hang, they will have the thrilling opportunity to perform their new knee hang trick to the catcher and swing in his/her hands.
We will wrap up the day with a summary and discussion of their experience. What happened when things got tough? How did they deal with fear or anxiety? Could they see how much they improved through their hard work, diligence and practice?
If you take your badge seriously you can have the girls prepare by beginning a physical practice using these resources:
To get more out of your circus camp try these fitness tips:
A. Toughen up those hands: To prepare hands for Flying and Aerial Arts rub them on a broom stick 4 times each week to toughen them up.
B. Gain Strength: If there is a place for you to do pull-ups, try this challenge- start with isometric holds and negative pull ups, use a chair to help you get up, hold there as long as possible, and then lower back down slowly. Work up to doing 1 whole pull up and try adding 1 pull-up each time you practice. Set yourself a goal-perhap to do 7 pull-ups consecutively, when that becomes easy, try setting your goal higher-perhaps to 15 pull -ups! You can do it with perseverance and practice! (Consider putting a pull-up bar in a door frame) And check out this pull-up tutroiral. https://youtu.be/mIZLkE9OLpU
For very young children you may prefer this method https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjskeniCLno
C. Balance things out by also doing push ups. You can begin on your knees with 5 push up. Each time try to do at least 1 push up with a straight body in a plank position. Don't forget that push ups work on different muscles depending on the position of your arms- do both military style and tricep pushups Check out this link for push up guidance. https://www.livestrong.com/article/531849-how-to-do-a-push-up-for-kids/
D. Stretching: Here is a very simple stretching routine to gain flexibility for health and to reduce injury. https://www.verywellfamily.com/simple-kids-stretching-exercises-1257070
