SHSAT Skill-Builder Winter Session

Our SHSAT Skill-Builder class is an introduction to the particularities of the Specialized High School entrance exam. The course is designed for 7th graders who are just beginning their SHSAT prep process. In the Skill-Builder course, our instructors will help students build foundational skills in math, reading comprehension, and grammar, while also introducing test-taking strategies specific to the format of the SHSAT. The course provides a great initiation into what has become a rite of passage for many NYC teenagers, and builds a skill set that is vital not only for this exam, but for success in any of the city's top high schools. 

We begin the course with a  diagnostic mini-test for both the math and verbal sections of the test (the mini-assessment is for instructional use only). Once we have scored the tests, we will structure each class according to the needs of the group. Homework is assigned after each lesson to make use of the students' time outside of class, and to allow students the opportunity to practice the strategies and skills that they have learned in class. At the conclusion of the course, we offer a proctored practice test and will return a score report so that families may use the results to determine next steps in their student’s prep process.
