Class Experience
Our SHSAT Skill-Builder class is an introduction to the particularities of the Specialized High School entrance exam. The course is designed for 7th graders who are just beginning their SHSAT prep process. In the Skill-Builder course, our instructors will help students build foundational skills in math, reading comprehension, and grammar, while also introducing test-taking strategies specific to the format of the SHSAT. The course provides a great initiation into what has become a rite of passage for many NYC teenagers, and builds a skill set that is vital not only for this exam, but for success in any of the city's top high schools.
We begin the course with a diagnostic mini-test for both the math and verbal sections of the test (the mini-assessment is for instructional use only). Once we have scored the tests, we will structure each class according to the needs of the group. Homework is assigned after each lesson to make use of the students' time outside of class, and to allow students the opportunity to practice the strategies and skills that they have learned in class. At the conclusion of the course, we offer a proctored practice test and will return a score report so that families may use the results to determine next steps in their student’s prep process.
This is an ONLINE class taught by a live instructor.

Course Materials:
All registered students will need to purchase a test prep book for the course. We will be using the test prep book throughout the course, and your student will need to have the book available during the online sessions. Please purchase the "Princeton Review: Cracking the New York City SHSAT (Specialized High Schools Admissions Test), 3rd Edition" book prior to the first session. - If notified a month before class begins, a 100% credit or 75% refund is available
- If notified up to two weeks before class begins, a 100% credit or 50% refund is available
- Within 2 weeks of class, we are unable to offer adjustments or credits
How To Participate
Attend class via Zoom video
This class will be hosted on Zoom video conferencing platform. You will receive an email 30 minutes before class starts with a link to the class and access instructions. We recommend you make sure your device is up to date and meets all system requirements before class.

About Smith Street Workshop and Maternelle
Smith Street is a French immersion preschool and a comprehensive tutoring, educational enrichment center in Brooklyn.
We provide individual and group tutoring and test prep.
