Class Experience

Join us at Design Hive for an in-person day camp focused on the creative exploration of Maker Education: hands-on engineering, design, art, craft, and tech.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE REGISTERING

We are a small, process art and STEM studio. We don't have an outdoor space, though we do some stretching, dance, and movement during the camp day. Our physical space impacts our scheduling, which is why our camp is not the length of a full school day, and why we do not  offer extended daycare.

When you walk into our studio, what you see is what you get! Because we don't have separate rooms or other spaces for campers to work in, we have the expectation that kids of all ages work together on projects.

We acknowledge that 5-11 is a wide age range. However, we design our projects and scaffold our instruction so that a 5-6 year old and a 10-11 year old can do the same project. We rarely separate students in our studio by age group.

Our older students can dive a bit deeper into a project or get a bit more complex, and our younger students benefit from seeing the skills and behavior of our older campers modeled for them.  As veteran classroom teachers, with 25+ years of experience between us, we see the indelible value of kids in this age range working and learning together.

If this does not sound appealing to you or your child, or you are looking for something catered to a very specific age range, please consider all this before registering and look at our other more specialized camps.

Notes

**Cancellation Policy:**
Please read our policy carefully. WE NO LONGER ISSUE REFUNDS.

**Drop In Pricing:**
We offer incentivized pricing for full-week enrollments. Please be aware that for drop-in sessions, no credits or refunds will be provided if the cumulative cost exceeds the full-week price. This pricing structure is designed to offer flexibility while promoting the benefits of full-week engagement.

As a small, women and minority-owned business, your enrollment fees are vital. They not only support the valuable maker experience we provide but also help us maintain our facilities and keep the lights on! Every booking is significant, and your understanding of our policies supports our community and ongoing operations.

Class Requirements

  • Our camps and workshops tend to be messy, especially our maker sessions and process art classes. We frequently use paint, sticky substances like resin and clay, and tools like screwdrivers and cardboard saws. Please send children in clothes that can get something on them that may not wash out.

What you'll learn

  • This camp offers a combination of project work and exploratory activities to engage kids in maker activities.
  • Activities MAY include, but are not limited to process and kinetic art, circuitry, chemistry, game design, movement, architecture, engineering, jewelry making, and more!⁣  ⁣ ⁣
  • We are not a coding or robotics camp, we are all about messy, process-based, not outcome-based activities. If you are looking for something tech-based, please see our Lego & Robotics offerings, if applicable.
