Class Experience

This class is for returning How to Build a Novel students who want to continue developing their writing. The class is run like a critique group where students will present pages which are read aloud in class, then discussed by their fellow writers. Students will receive notes on their pages, correcting grammar and punctuation, and addressing plot, character, and world-building.

Class Requirements

  • Students need to have taken a How to Build a Novel class previously
  • Students should have a strong desire to continue writing their novel and improve their writing.

What you'll learn

  • How to be a good critique partner, story structure, character development, and world-building.

Other Things To Know

Homework

Students should come prepared to present pages for critique every other week.

Meet your Instructor

Michele M.

Once upon a time, Michele wrote for Chowder on Cartoon Network. It was her favorite job until she started teaching. She shares her own experiences receiving editorial letters, pitch-meeting failures, and writing successes to encourage students’ bravery. Michele believes you learn more when having fun. Whether she is coaching archery in the Lower Arroyo or coaxing a story out of a student with a mad lib, she wants her students to have a good time.

About Trellis

We’re a team of seasoned homeschooling parents who are creating a secular, a-political place for learning.
Education outside of the conventional system doesn’t have to be done alone. We believe it’s about collaboration and respectful relationships.
Trellis is in Northeast Los Angeles and provides classes that nurture the hearts and minds of 10-20 year old students. By embracing a holistic approach to education, we offer interdisciplinary instruction, hands-on practice, life-skill classes, one-on-one tutoring, and student-led clubs alongside math and science that meet A-G requirements.
We tend to the whole family by offering a workspace, regular meet-ups, and education nights for parents.
Our mission is to provide experiences that will strengthen a child’s ability to shape themselves and engage in the world as active compassionate citizens.
