Class Experience
Play & Make is an Oh! Canary class designed for your child to engage in art and play alongside a caretaker. During this class, students will be welcomed by a diverse selection of art and sensory play activities for them to explore independently. Open play will be followed by a gentle and nurturing circle time where your child’s facilitator will welcome them with a song and demonstrate the art process that our artists will explore at our studio tables. The perfect step up from the Toddler Collective, Play & Make is the perfect opportunity to unplug and connect with your child!
Notes
Welcome to Oh! Canary
Time: Play & Make is 55 mins long. Please arrive no earlier than 5 minutes beforehand. This will give us the opportunity to get properly set up before our artists arrive.
Teachers are subject to change as we approach the start of the season.
Location:
SOUTH ORANGE: The studio is located at 165 Valley Street Unit B in South Orange. Street parking is available on Valley Street and a public parking garage is connected to the building on Third Street across from Sloan Street. Please be mindful that Valley Street is a very well traveled road and keep your child at arm's length as you approach the studio.
MONTCLAIR: Our Montclair studio is located at 237 Lorraine Avenue in Upper Montclair. Parking is available in the lot behind our storefront as well as the paid town lot across the street. Please enter through the front left hand door.
Attire: This playgroup involves a lot of messy fun! The children often immerse themselves in wet and colorful materials. Pick an old t-shirt and pants for them to wear every week (an art uniform!), and a change of clothes is always a good idea. You or your child's caretaker might also consider that paint splatter happens (we use a lot of tempera paint, which is non toxic, but can stain). Both children and caretakers must remove shoes upon entering the studio.
Caretaker's Role: This class is half art and sensory play and half project. It is designed for our 2.5 - 5 year olds to play independently and then begin to engage in work that is more focused on a particular process. After play, we’ll meet for a circle, discuss the process we’ll be exploring that day, and then you'll move to our studio tables where you’ll sit alongside your child and be able to watch their creativity unfold as you have a special time to connect through play and art. When in doubt, sit back, encourage independence, and enjoy the opportunity to observe your child’s artistic development. Please silence all calls and messages for the duration of the class.
Illness and Makeups: As in most daycare and school policies, if your child has had a fever within 24 hours, please keep them home to refrain from spreading illness. Please let us know as soon as you know your child will not be attending, so that those on the wait list may join us that day. One make up is available per 12 weeks.
Weather: In the case of inclement weather, class may be cancelled. If this occurs we will accommodate with a make- up date.
We're looking forward to having your little ones join us!

Sample Class Format
- Artists and their caretakers will be welcomed by a nurturing teacher into a studio space full of art and sensory activities designed specifically for them. After 25- 30 minutes of open play and exporation, the teacher will gather the group for the lesson of the day. Each week's art exploration is an open ended lesson that will allow the artists to approach the materials at their individual levels. After the teacher's intruduction, artists and their caretakers will spend about 20- 25 minutes together creating at the table with the option to return to open play if they complete the provocation.

The class always has different stations for the kids to explore. It keeps them engaged and lets them explore.
Improvements:
The only thing that could help would be a little more hands on from the instructors during the craft section.

My toddler and I loved our first class at Oh Canary! The combination of free time with multiple art mediums as well as a more structured project was so nice. The studio is also so beautiful!
Improvements:
I only wish we could have stayed longer, as did my toddler! We will definitely be back.

Loved:
The class structure is new for my toddler, where she was initially used to open, unstructured exploration of the younger class, but (!) it is a great introduction to sustained attention to a particular creative task. We love the engagement, enthusiasm, and encouragement of the instructors, especially Margaret!
