Class Experience

Participants work with their classmates and the instructor during class in an immersion setting towards an advanced listening, speaking, reading, and writing ability; all class activities are conducted in German. The  C1-level courses are for those who are looking to learn German in a formal setting. This class covers selected chapters from Vielfalt C1 and is for students working towards C1 proficiency in German in a formal setting.

Those who fully participate in C1 for multiple sessions, typically over the span of 4 - 8 semesters, will ideally be prepared for the C1 Goethe Exam, recognized globally as proof of German language ability. Read more here about the Goethe Institute and their language exams. https://www.goethe.de/en/spr/kup/prf.html

Class Requirements

  • B2.2 (3 - 4 semesters) or equivalent

Sample Class Format

Once a week in a 1.5 hour meeting, students work through activities in the coursebook in partners, small groups, and collectively as a class. Chapters are organized thematically. Students answer questions, written and verbally, in response to:

  • reading texts
  • listening to dialogues, and
  • watching short videos

Participants will undertake situations and topics typically encountered in everyday life and travel. Students will additionally refine independent study and use of the German Language.

Other Things To Know

Meet your Instructor

Henrike B.

My name is Henrike Belz, I’m a native German speaker, mother of three adult „kids”, and living here in Austin since 2004. I’m teaching mainly adults at all levels (A1-C1) and all ages (16 - 86!), in person and, since the pandemic hit, online as well. Beyond that, I’m a certified Prüferin for the Goethe Exams, which is a very humbling experience. When I’m not teaching, I most often will be found in my wildlife habitat at home, gardening ‘til sunset, saving the environment one plant at a time.
