Class Experience
Students work with their classmates and the instructor during class towards developing their beginning listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an immersion setting; all class activities are conducted primarily in German. German 1 - 3 are formal classes for young learners in traditional, private, and home school who are looking to learn German in a structured but fun environment.
Class Requirements
- Prerequisite: Jugendliche 1 or equivalent
*for help with class placement, please reach out to classes@germantexans.org
What you'll learn
- Students practice their communication skills (written and spoken) on topics such as schedules, school subjects, days of the week, school, dates and time, celbrations and holidays, months, nature, colors, food, and giving directions.
- Goethe Langauge Exam: These classes are designed to help students prepare for the Goethe Language Exams, accepted internationally as proof of German language ability. Students are ideally prepared to take the "Fit A1" exam after 4 semesters of study (German 1, German 2, and two semesters of German 3). GTHS offers Goethe testing throughout the year at its downtown Austin location. Read more about the Goethe Institute and their language exams here: https://www.goethe.de/en/index.html
Sample Class Format
- German 1, 2 and 3 are formal classes that follow an immersion-based, highly interactive course book– Dabei! A1.1 – and lessons are supplemented by correlating independent activities in a workbook.
- Students cover chapters 7 - 12 in German 2 of the Dabei! A1.1 books.
Other Things To Know

Students work through activities in the workbook independently, which supplement the content from class lessons. Students should expect to spend at least an equal amount of time outside of class in addition to weekly class meetings, and younger learners may require assistance in completing homework activities. Work in the workbook is checked independently via an answer key.
