Class Experience
Participants work with their classmates and the instructor during class towards developing their beginning listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an immersion setting; all class activities are conducted primarily in German.
The three A1-level courses are for those who are looking to learn German from the beginning in a formal setting.
Those who fully participate in and complete A1.1, A1.2, and A1.3, typically over the span of 3 semesters, will ideally be prepared for the A1 Goethe Exam, recognized globally as proof of German language ability. Read more here about the Goethe Institute and their language exams.
Class Requirements
- No prerequisite German knowledge needed
- You can take this proficiency test to see where you stand. https://www.hueber.de/momente/einstufungstest

ABOUT THE TEXTS:
The textbook can be purchased in 2 halves (chapters 1 - 12 and 13 - 24, for the “Momente A1.1” and “Momente A1.2” texts, respectively), or as a complete version (chapters 1 - 24, Momente A1). Additionally, you have the option to purchase the digital and/or print version of the texts. The digital version can be purchased directly from the Hueber Shop (linked above). The print version can also be purchased from the Hueber shop, including as a bundle with the digital version, but the print copies will likely have long shipping times as they would be coming from Europe.
Serious students who are planning on taking the Goethe Exam may optionally elect to purchase the “Intensivtrainer” for further independent study and review of the material.
Please email classes@germantexans.org for questions about the textbook.

I liked the textbook and the workbook. It was also cool to attend class at the German Texan Heritage Society.
Improvements:
I actually stopped attending the class after four sessions. Flavia was very disorganized and unprepared and for each session - it felt like she was just reading from the textbook instead of teaching us. Also, every class she asked if people could come to the 5pm class instead because it was a smaller group so it was “better” because they got to practice more. Why would the school allow my 7pm class to be so big then? Overall, I felt like I got nothing out of the class and I’m very disappointed.

Loved:
The instructor, Ally, is really a great teacher. She does an excellent job with the class material while keeping things fun and light. It can be really difficult learning a new skill, and I think people are likely to quit things that they aren't good at. She makes the class feel comfortable in making mistakes, and is supportive of the effort. Personally I'm more likely to continue taking lessons here even though it's not close to me because of the instructor.
Improvements:
If there was a large TV that could display the course material, we could all see it easily, and I think it would help out the instructor. As it is now we make due with a dry erase board and gathering around a laptop screen. I think the organization should provide more handouts during the course. I'd benefit from a cheat sheet of beginner material. I've found some stuff online but if it were to follow the course program I think it'd be good.
