Class Experience

The Atomic Knights Chess Club is a welcoming, open club for chess enthusiasts ages 5 -17, and all skill levels. We do welcome kids ages 4 who know chess basics.

This Saturday program provides a structured yet flexible environment where players can sharpen their skills, enjoy friendly competition, and learn from one another in a supportive setting.

While open play is a core part of the experience, we have touch points for learning and growth. If what a player wants the most right now is over the board play, then it's fine to come when their schedule permits.

We don't make the instruction or workshops mandatory since there is still a great deal that can be learned among peers. So if a few kids want to stay stuck at their boards in game play (while the instruction is taking place) they are able to.

Note that some weekends will include tournaments, but we will give advance notice.

  • Each session begins with open play, allowing players to warm up and get comfortable. Beginners can ask questions and practice, while more experienced players jump into games with peers.

  • Our coach introduces a specific tactic, strategy, or theme each week. Topics may include openings, checkmating patterns, or defensive techniques. This short segment is geared toward teaching something valuable to players at any level.

  • Players are matched with opponents based on skill level or their preferences for the day. Matches include time for one-on-one or group feedback from the coach, helping players recognize strengths and areas for improvement.

  • Break Out Sessions are taught by rated chess coaches, including a virtual workshop session with Women's International Master, Knarik Mouradian from Cyprus.

  • Players have time to discuss their games, ask questions, or make plans to return next week. This wrap-up reinforces the social aspect of chess and allows everyone to share their favorite moments from the day.
