Loved:

The atmosphere. Taking a test in a kindergarten room made it much more relaxed and rather comical.

Improvements:

It's odd having to do the speaking portion with a test instructor instead of another test taker as it tends to put more work on the test taker as the test instructor can't provide too much assistance in a conversation for the test. Less natural feeling than a conversation with another test taker, as it was about asking questions, offering suggestions, and clarifying.

The exam was really fun although a bit stressful. The Prüfunglehrer:innen were awesome. I loved that we we immersed from the start of the exam! I would love to take another exam with them.

Improvements:

Nothing much. Just make sure to study!

Loved:

I did not have a class. I only took the B1 exam.

Improvements:

I think it was fine. I personally only had a challenge because I had not taken any type of language classes, so I did not know what to expect regarding the test. I wasn't completely clear as to what was expected of me because I'm not familiar with the different levels as to what a B1 student should know.

Loved:

The test space was set up well for Covid and the teachers all very nice.

Improvements:

The listening portion of the test was made more difficult for several reasons: the tape recording was a bit scratchy, the background noise in the actual recording is louder than the actual dialog, and the protests outside the building due to BLM and the recent elections also made it hard to hear. Also, why does it take 6 weeks to get the results when the test is all multiple choice. The speaking portion could be decided right there an then by the native listeners:)

Meet your Instructors

Henrike B.

My name is Henrike Belz, I’m a native German speaker, mother of three adult „kids”, and living here in Austin since 2004. I’m teaching mainly adults at all levels (A1-C1) and all ages (16 - 86!), in person and, since the pandemic hit, online as well. Beyond that, I’m a certified Prüferin for the Goethe Exams, which is a very humbling experience. When I’m not teaching, I most often will be found in my wildlife habitat at home, gardening ‘til sunset, saving the environment one plant at a time.

Rita G.

I am a native speaker, born in a tiny town in Saxony, and moved to Austin in 2006. In fall of 2018 I began working for GTHS as an Assistant Teacher at Samstagsschule. These days I teach mostly adults in beginning levels. I like to point out the many similarities between English and German, show that not everything is hard and new, which my students find reassuring.
