Class Experience
This course has two parts. In the first half, students will craft personal narratives, transforming values, experiences, and memories into bold, compelling stories. They’ll explore all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming to crafting essays, producing at least one longer narrative and several shorter pieces. Readings like “Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie and “Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan will inspire their work, while workshops provide feedback and skill-building. By the end, students will have a polished personal narrative and the tools for future writing.
In the second half, students dive into poetry, reading age-appropriate poems and learning to analyze meaning through sound and structure. They’ll write their own poems, engage in critical discussions, and leave with a deeper appreciation for poetry and several original works.
