Class Experience

Have fun while learning to code! In this introductory Scratch course, we use creative play and games to teach the basics of coding. After taking this class campers frequently take the second camp in this series, Code Your Own Adventure in Scratch.

Campers will imagine a story, plan it out, and share it with their teachers and peers.

Once campers have planned a story they love, our all-female, rockstar instructors will model how to plan, develop and create a story using Scratch a drag-and-drop multimedia programming language designed by MIT for young learners. From beginners to campers with prior coding experience, we teach coding the way kids learn best: through play, collaboration, and imagination. campers will leave this course with a solid understanding of basic coding concepts and the Scratch platform, as well as an animated story they can share with their loved ones.

Boolean Girl is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to reverse the under-representation of girls and women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) by engaging girls and under-represented groups in grades three through eight with meaningful, hands-on instruction and sustained exposure to computer science and engineering in a collaborative and welcoming environment.
Thanks again for supporting us in our mission to bring computer science education to as many children as possible.

Sample Class Format

  • Small class sizes 10-15
  • High instructor to student ratio (1:6 or better) so kids get lots of personal attention.
  • We understand that affordable summer camps for young coders are difficult to find so we do continue to to offer some co-ed camps.

Loved:

The girls were engaged and learned something.

Improvements:

I’d suggest showing them a finished version of the activity in the beginning, so they could see what they were making. I’d also suggest using a marker to add the instructor names to the board.
