Class Experience

This workshop will be conducted by our Fine art teacher "Ms Priya Ranjan". She is an amazing watercolor artist and has excellent command of other mediums too. Madhubani folk art is one of her fortes.

Madhubani Art (or Mithila painting) is a style of Indian paintings, practiced in the Mithila region of India. It was named after Madhubani District of Bihar, India which is where it originated. It's a type of Indian folk-art form. This painting is done with various tools, such as fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks and using natural dyes and pigments. It is characterized by its eye-catching geometrical patterns.

This art form was done to decorate the walls of the village. With intricate details and bright hues, the art form is traditionally done on walls. These paintings depict Hindu Mythology, flora and fauna and the everyday life of the villagers.

Join us for a series of workshops where we dive into the art of drawing, birds, animals, nature and expressive and graceful human figures in authentic Mithila art form. I will show you the step-by-step technique of creating art in Madhubani Style.

<<FOR BEGINNERS>>

We will start with the basic Madhubani motifs and a few traditional concepts. Students will learn to put together the concepts and create their very own traditional Mithila Art. We will wrap it up with ‘The Tree of Life’ Painting.

This is a four-week program.

<<FOR INTERMEDIATES>>

We will start with the theory about Mithila or Madhubani Art. It’s history, the different styles and evolution through time. We will learn to sketch some basic motifs. Then we will learn to create the Krishna Raasleela theme on 18X24 size paper. The teacher will demonstrate the steps and motifs needed for the artwork using two most popular Mithila art styles, called Bharni and Kachni. Upon successful completion of the course, the participants should be able to create Madhubani painting on their own.
