Class Experience
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Intermediate
Please Note: This class will focus on deepening one's understanding of advanced technical skills and personal development for one's ceramics practice. We suggest students feel thoroughly comfortable on the wheel before taking Intermediate Ceramics. We recommend proficiency in centering, opening, pulling, shaping, glazing and basic hand building.
TYPE: Wheel Throwing and some handbuilding
THIS CLASS… takes your ceramics skills to the next level! Learn to use the wheel as a tool to develop your own distinct aesthetic while taking on new ambitious projects. From lidded forms to new throwing skills such as double-walled vessels, altered forms, throwing pieces in multiple parts, and going big. While focusing on the wheel, some hand-building elements will be added for open-ended experimentation.
COMMUNITY STUDIO AGREEMENT:
As a member of the Artshack community, you are supporting our mission to make clay accessible for all. We expect all students to commit to the Community Studio ethos and adopt a ‘Leave It Better’ mindset when it comes to maintaining studio hygiene, especially when cleaning up your work stations at the end of each class or open studio session. We also ask students to be patience, flexible and forgiving in regards to the variability of the firing process. Your work may not come out as quickly as you’d like or exactly how you’d expect. This is the nature of clay! Your work may look very different after firing so please take pictures of your pieces so that you can find your piece upon completion. We operate as a process based studio, emphasizing experimentation and learning over immediate results. We hope your experience at Artshack can center the process over the product, as well.
OPEN STUDIO:
We offer unlimited open studio time for adult students (with the exception of one-off classes, which do not include open studio time). We ask that you self-regulate during high-traffic hours, so that everyone can enjoy this perk. Please check the calendar for open studio hours, which you can find on our website or scan by QR code from signs around the studio.
Open Studio is only successful (and possible) if everyone is doing their part to keep the studio clean. In addition to returning your tools to the proper studio, please remember to clean up your workspace and any of the areas where you've worked before you leave. It can be easy to lose track, so assume you might have more to clean-up than you think. We ask you to be mindful of the studio being a community space, and incorporate cleaning into your routine. Additionally, open studio always ends 30 mins before programming to allow our teachers and Work Study students to set up for their class. You should be completely cleaned up when Open Studio ends.
CANCELLATION POLICY: If you wish to receive a refund, your request MUST be received 1 week prior to the first day of your class. After this time we are unable to offer refunds, credits, transfers or make-up classes, even due to emergency or COVID-19 related sickness. Additionally, we are unable to offer make up classes for missed session. Students who must miss a class should use Open Studio to make up for missed time and practice.
THE PRICE OF THIS CLASS INCLUDES: shared community tools, studio clay, glazes, unlimited open studio time and shelf space. Each student is charged an additional $40 Firing Fee. This covers up to 4 items. After 4 items, you pay regular firing fees by the size of your piece (length x width x height x .06).

Loved:
I love that we are introduced to new challenges every class. Camila is amazing and I love her teaching style. I like that she lets us develop our own projects or work on projects she demos for us.
Improvements:
Having access to community tools during class. It's been harder to find tools at the studio on Saturdays that overlap with open studio time. Especially trimming tools.

Loved:
I love this class, it is the favorite part of my week. I am a novice ceramicist, there are students at a much higher level in this intermediate class, but I always feel welcome and integral to the class. Einat is a truly gifted teacher. Einat meets every student at their experience level whilst maintaining a rigorous practice and bringing out the best in her students. I am, as always, honored to be in this class.
Improvements:
Would like the ability to register much earlier for upcoming classes.

Loved:
I feel really lucky to have fallen into this very special ecosystem. Artshack has created a magical place. My daughter started taking afterschool classes here, she love it so much I started. The students & teacher are unique and wonderful, the space is beautiful. Einat is an exceptional teacher, her personal investment in each student, her attention to detail and rigor are powerful and I see why many students stay in this same class for months and years. I plan on staying long into the future.
Improvements:
Always missing batt pins or batt pins don't fit batts.
