Class Experience

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced

TYPE: Handbuilding

THIS CLASS… covers four different building methods using templates and texture to make functional and non functional sculpture. We will form sculptures out of pinch pots, use the extruder for coil pot building, work with soft slabs to make functional pieces then transitioning to leather hard slabs for more architectural sculpting. By the end of the session you will combine all of these methods to make functional, non functional work and the sculpture of your dreams.

COMMUNITY STUDIO AGREEMENT:

As a member of the Artshack community, you are supporting our mission to make clay accessible for all. We expect all students to commit to the Community Studio ethos and adopt a ‘Leave It Better’ mindset when it comes to maintaining studio hygiene, especially when cleaning up your work stations at the end of each class or open studio session. We also ask students to be patience, flexible and forgiving in regards to the variability of the firing process. Your work may not come out as quickly as you’d like or exactly how you’d expect. This is the nature of clay! Your work may look very different after firing so please take pictures of your pieces so that you can find your piece upon completion. We operate as a process based studio, emphasizing experimentation and learning over immediate results. We hope your experience at Artshack can center the process over the product, as well.

OPEN STUDIO:

We offer unlimited open studio time for adult students (with the exception of one-off classes, which do not include open studio time). We ask that you self-regulate during high-traffic hours, so that everyone can enjoy this perk. Please check the calendar for open studio hours, which you can find on our website or scan by QR code from signs around the studio.

Open Studio is only successful (and possible) if everyone is doing their part to keep the studio clean. In addition to returning your tools to the proper studio, please remember to clean up your workspace and any of the areas where you've worked before you leave. It can be easy to lose track, so assume you might have more to clean-up than you think. We ask you to be mindful of the studio being a community space, and incorporate cleaning into your routine. Additionally, open studio always ends 30 mins before programming to allow our teachers and Work Study students to set up for their class. You should be completely cleaned up when Open Studio ends.

CANCELLATION POLICY: If you wish to receive a refund, your request MUST be received 1 week prior to the first day of your class. After this time we are unable to offer refunds, credits, transfers or make-up classes, even due to emergency or COVID-19 related sickness. Additionally, we are unable to offer make up classes for missed session. Students who must miss a class should use Open Studio to make up for missed time and practice.

THE PRICE OF THIS CLASS INCLUDES: shared community tools, studio clay, glazes, unlimited open studio time and shelf space. Each student is charged an additional $40 Firing Fee. This covers up to 4 items. After 4 items, you pay regular firing fees by the size of your piece (length x width x height x .06).

Loved:

I love that I can continue to learn different clay techniques.

Improvements:

I do not like this instructor teaching style. I’m not sure if she was just tired because the class is at the end of the day but she always seems irritated. If you ask a question you can tell she’s annoyed with you before mustering up an answer. I missed a class and asked if I can get a quick run through of how to make slabs and she ignored my request so I taught myself and watched another classmate make a slab. I was really excited to learn hand building but feel uninspired while in class.

Loved:

Lena is a wonderful, experienced, and knowledgeable instructor. She's great at guiding you through any questions you may have about technique, construction or glazing. The class has a friendly atmosphere. The open studio hours help improve your practice.

Improvements:

More tools, better banding wheels. Most students bring in their own basic tools, but would be nice to have more options to help one explore.
