Class Experience

Logicus Math Grade 3 Honors Summer Prep is a two-week summer preparatory course for incoming third-graders in our Park Slope, Brooklyn location held 2 hours per day, Monday to Friday, preparing students for the Grade 3 Honors curriculum in the fall. This course is designed to strengthen key Grade 2 math skills while introducing advanced concepts that will prepare students for the accelerated Honors track. Through interactive, small-group learning (6-8 students), students will develop logical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and creative mathematical thinking.

At Logicus, we leverage the thoroughness and breadth of the Russian approach to emphasize logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, encouraging students to approach math with a critical and creative mindset. Incorporating the Singaporean methodology, we aim to make math intuitive and visually engaging. The Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach is integrated throughout the curriculum, which supports students in understanding concepts through hands-on (concrete), visual (pictorial), and algebraic (abstract) stages.

This rigorous and interactive summer prep program equips students with the confidence, analytical skills, and mathematical foundation needed to excel in Grade 3 Honors and beyond.

Curriculum:

1. Advanced Algebraic Equations: Students will build on their Grade 2 algebra skills by tackling more complex equations. The focus will be on manipulating variables, coefficients, and constants effectively and understanding the critical principle of maintaining equilibrium in equations.

2. Enhanced Problem-Solving Skills: The course will sharpen students' proficiency in advanced problem-solving strategies, including Making Organized Lists, Working Backwards, Logical Reasoning, and Breaking Down complex problems.

3. Advanced Addition and Subtraction: Expanding from the basics, students will engage in intricate addition and subtraction problems. We will focus on visualization and mental arithmetic techniques, emphasizing the understanding and selection of the most efficient problem-solving methods.

4. Multiplication and Division: Students will explore advanced concepts like Multiplication as Comparison, Division as Comparison, the Array Model, and the Distributive Property of Multiplication. These are foundational for understanding fractions, ratios, and more complex mathematical operations.

5. Geometry: The course will dive deeper into geometry and enhance students' ability to visualize, identify, and construct various geometric figures. We will focus on spatial relationships and transformations, fundamental aspects of geometric intuition, and proof-based reasoning.

6. Further Exploration of Patterns: Students will delve into more complex number and shape patterns, applying these concepts to algebraic operations. This will aid in solidifying their understanding of mathematical relationships and their algebraic representations.

7. Equations and Real-World Application: Building upon earlier skills, students will now tackle equations involving multiplication and division. They will learn to formulate and solve real-world problems using equations, enhancing their ability to use mathematics creatively for problem-solving.
