Character Design for Tweens/Young Teens

In this course students will learn to create appealing characters by using the principles of silhouette, shape language and extensive research. They will learn what it takes to develop a character design from initial idea to finalized character. This class will also explore narrative tropes, and how we can utilize those tropes to create engaging, unique designs. This course will build up to a project, where students will design 3 characters of their choosing according to classic narrative archetypes (i.e. hero, mentor, villain, etc.). 

At Oh! Canary we will ask your child to adhere to the following “Artists Agreement” in our studio.

1. I will show respect to the instructors, my fellow artists, and my artist- self by listening to instruction with my eyes and ears. This also means I will not speak over others when it is their turn to speak.

2. I will not run in the studio.

3. During work time I will put forth my best effort and not distract others from their best effort.

4. I will not speak poorly of anyone’s work or actions. I will also not touch another artist's work without asking them first. I am here as a part of an artists’ community and will only use my words and actions to lift others up.

5. I will power down my device for the duration of the class.

Our plan of action for those that break our Artists Agreement:

1st time: A conversation with the instructor in the back room.
2nd time: A call to my parent or guardian to pick me up from class.
3rd time: Dismissal from the class for the remainder of the season.

Our Artist Agreement is a plan is to protect the experience of our community of students. When a child's behavior is distracting to the group or makes others feel badly, it can be detrimental to artistic and personal growth. Dismissal from class for behavioral reasons is nonrefundable.
