Class Experience

🌈Join award-winning author Saundra Mitchell to read a new tween/lower teen LGBTQIA+ book each month in a social, inclusive space.🌈

⭐As a professional author, I love talking about books with students-- and I especially love urging them to dig deep and think about books beyond a simple "I liked it" or "I didn't like it". This class seeks to engage students in meaningful discussion about books while also touching on literary devices like symbolism, foreshadowing, tone, and voice. This class is open to all, and is a kind, supportive place to read and discuss LGBTQIA+ titles, authors, and stories.

⭐Students may join the class at any point during the month-- the teacher will send new students a message to let them know where to read up to! That said, if students are a little behind on the reading, don't sweat it-- there will be no shaming, we promise. Our goal is a fun, chatty, supportive, and affirming bookish space!

2025:

January: Funeral Girl by Emma K Ohland

February: Melissa by Alex Gino

March: Nimona by ND Stevenson

April: My Dear Henry by Kalynn Bayron

May: They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

June: Riley Weaver Needs a Date to the Gaybutante Ball by Jason June

July: The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas

August: The Deep Dark by Mallory Knox Osterberg

September: I'm So Not Over You by Kosoko Jackson

October: Don't Let the Forest In by CG Drews

November: Right Where I Left You by Julian Winters

December: You Can Go Your Own Way by Eric Smith

(All books are available in UK/AU, and on audiobook for accessibility!)

While reading ahead isn't "against the rules", please encourage your student not to get too far ahead, lest they risk accidentally revealing spoilers to the other readers.

⭐Please note that students must independently purchase or borrow the month's selected book-- copies are not provided, and are not available for free download anywhere online. These books can be purchased anywhere books are sold.
