Acrylic Painting Fundamentals with Lora Monahan
Join professional artist Lora Monahan for a five-week acrylic painting class designed to introduce the fundamentals of representational painting (realism) — painting what you see.
Each week, students will create a new painting, starting with a floral still life and progressing through landscapes, water scenes, and birds. Lora will guide you through the entire painting process — from design to completion — covering color mixing, composition, blending techniques, and using values to create depth and visual interest.
With a small class size, you’ll receive personalized instruction, ensuring each participant receives the attention they need. This class is designed to be fun and approachable, offering a positive, “I-can-paint” experience for artists of all skill levels.

Parking is limited on Tuesdays at Make and St. Giles. Please use the large Sanctuary lot when entering from Greenway Avenue and follow the signs through the alley to the studio entrance. Kindly avoid parking in the lot by the playground.

Supply List
Please bring the following supplies to class.
They are listed in order of importance, with the use of heavy body artist/professional grade paint being most important. Artist grade paint makes the painting process easier and more efficient since it contains more pigment than student grade paint. You’ll use less paint and take the guesswork out of color mixing.
1. Paint– Artist or Professional Grade Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in 2oz (60ml) tubes; I suggest purchasing a larger 5oz tube (or two 2oz tubes) of titanium white.
Here are recommended brands and colors you’ll need:
• Golden Artists’ Heavy Body Acrylics
• Windsor & Newton Professional Acrylics
• Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylics
• Plaza Artists’ Professional Acrylics (not “Studio”)
Colors
• Yellow: Hansa Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Light, or Primary Yellow
• Red: Cadmium Red Light (Primary Red OK), Alizarin Crimson
• Blue: Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue
• White: Titanium White
• Green: Sap Green
• Brown: Burnt Sienna
• Pink: Permanent Rose (Quinacridone Red OK)
2. Canvas– Five (5) 11x14 or 12x16 stretched cotton duck canvases. Blick Studio or Blick two-pack are good quality for the price.
3. Brushes– Size & Type:
• 1-inch Flat
• #4 Round
• ½-inch Flat
• #8 Round
• #2 Liner or Rigger
Recommended brushes:
• Princeton Real Value 9152 Brush Set (5) - $13.33 at Amazon
• Princeton Real Value 9146 Brush Set (4) - $12.20 at Amazon
• Purchase 1-inch brush separately
4. Palette– Grey Matters disposable paper palette, available in 9x12 or 12x16. (Optional: Masterson Sta-wet palette box with blue lid; the 12x16 paper palette fits inside. This is good if you want to save paint for another same-day painting session.)
5. Miscellaneous
• Paper towels: Viva Signature Cloth, Bounty, or another thick brand
• Water container
• Small spray bottle for water to mist your paints
• Apron or clothes you don’t mind getting paint stained
6. Where to buy– I recommend buying everything at Blick Artist Materials or Jerry’s Artarama online. You can also buy online for pickup in-store or in person at Plaza Artist Materials.

First of all, I love the studio! It's a cozy, creative space, well stocked with essentials. I've never taken a painting class before, yet yesterday, I came home with (what I think is) a beautiful piece of art! Lora, the instructor, is patient, helpful, and amazingly talented.
Improvements:
Nothing I can think of.

I always learn a lot! Basics of painting with acrylics, creating colors, brush techniques, and helpful tips from the instructor. The class size is small and that's helpful too.
