Class Experience
Students will learn about the history of zines dating back to the 1930s, see and discuss examples of zines, and create their own zine using a variety of artistic methods including drawing, collage and hand-sewing.
Zines (short for fan-zines) are mini-sized, self-published, non-commercial magazines or booklets created, produced and distributed in small batches. Words and images may be typed, handwritten, painted, collage or drawn. Zines may be personal, political, instructional, poetic, informative, or even completely abstract, and subject matter can be absolutely anything! The finished zine may be folded, stapled, glued, taped, sewn or unbound. It may be reproduced and sold, shared with family or friends, or kept as a personal memento. When it comes to zines, there are no rules! Note: Participants may bring their own photos, collage materials or mementos, but this is not required. Materials included in price of workshop.
