Class Experience

Is your child a Minecraft fan with a big imagination? Our six-session creative writing class uses the magic of Minecraft to teach storytelling skills in a fun, engaging way!

By connecting the game’s familiar elements—like biomes, mobs, and crafting—to writing techniques, we help kids create their own unique stories while fostering creativity, critical thinking, and confidence. No actual gaming required-- this class taps into their love of the game without relying on playing it to inspire them.

Each session focuses on a different storytelling skill, such as world-building, character creation, or dialogue. Kids will design their own "biomes," dream up unforgettable characters, and tackle epic challenges—just like in Minecraft, but with pen and paper (or keyboard). The lessons are accessible, engaging, and packed with inspiration, making writing feel like an adventure instead of an assignment.

Whether your child is an aspiring author or simply loves all things Minecraft, this class is designed to meet them where they are. Our teachers-- who are all published authors!-- create a welcoming, supportive environment that encourages participation and celebrates creativity. By tapping into their passion for Minecraft, we help kids build essential writing skills that will serve them far beyond the classroom—and leave them excited to tell their next story!

Session one:

World Building: Crafting your biome!

-Discuss different Minecraft biomes (e.g., desert, jungle, tundra) and their unique features.

-Students brainstorm and describe their own unique biome, using sensory details (sight, sound, smell, etc.).

Session Two:

Character Creation: Unique Steves!

-Discuss how to de-dude-ify Steve and make him an original, unique character.

-Students will create their own unique version of Steve, with his own backstory and look!

Session Three:

Conflict: Surviving the Creeper Night

-Discuss Minecraft challenges like fighting mobs, avoiding lava, or gathering resources before nightfall.

-Students brainstorm a problem their character faces in their world.

-Write a short scene where the character confronts the challenge, including their emotions and actions.

Session Four:

Story Structure: From Spawn to End Portal

-Discuss how Minecraft has a loose “story arc” (starting in the Overworld, reaching the Nether, defeating the Ender Dragon).

-Students map out a basic story arc for their character: their goal, obstacles, and resolution.

-Write the opening scene, focusing on introducing the character and their goal.

Session Five:

Dialogue: Villagers, Zombies, and Banter!

-Talk about communication in Minecraft—villagers’ “huhs,” mobs’ noises, and players’ chat messages.

-Discuss what makes dialogue engaging and how it shows character traits.

-Write a conversation between their character and another character (villager, ally, or foe).

Session Six:

Epic Finale: The Ender Dragon Showdown!

-Discuss Minecraft’s ultimate challenge: defeating the Ender Dragon.

-Students write the climactic moment of their story, where their character faces their biggest challenge.

-Share their climactic scenes with the group, celebrating everyone’s creativity.

Notes

After thousands of students, we've settled on a firm "camera-on-and-on-camera" policy for all of our classes. This is to ensure a safe and engaging learning environment for all involved. Unfortunately, we are not able to make exceptions to this policy. Please be sure your learner is prepared to have their camera ready to go at the beginning of class!
