Class Experience

In this mixed-level Spanish class, students will acquire language skills through storytelling, games, hands-on projects, and other immersive experiences.  Lessons are topic-based and our instructor, a Venezuelan native and Spanish teacher of the Waldorf School, will focus on improving students' communication skills as well as expanding their vocabulary and enhancing pronunciation.

Our lessons typically include:

  • CIRCLE TIME: Storytime provides students with an authentic Spanish language experience that introduces and/or reinforces lessons. Games are also designed to enhance and review lessons through movement and collaboration.

  • ART TIME: Students complete an art project which is related to the theme for the lesson. Coloring and crafting will be a foundation to collecting vocabulary that is endemic to life on Whidbey island and beyond.

  • STUDENT PORTFOLIO ACTIVITY: Students will create their own ¡Loteria! boards with the vocabulary they learn so they can continue to practice Spanish with family at home.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Born in Barquisimeto Venezuela, Alan Pérez grew up in Michigan and recently moved to Whidbey Island after living in Portland, OR for 15 years. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus on Printmaking and a minor in Spanish Language.

Alan worked for over a decade in animal shelters as an adoption specialist, helping animals in need find their furever. He brings the same empathy and appreciation of diverse communities to his recent work as an assistant Spanish teacher with students grades K-8th.

When it comes to working with children, Alan enjoys seeing them experience the world through their own perspectives and voices. When he’s not exploring Whidbey Island with his dogs or his motorcycle, Alan enjoys making art, playing music and relaxing with a good book.
